Wow, we routinely get 70mph winds in our t'storms and they tear up so much, I wouldn't want to see 100+mph! I have not been in hurricane country in years and have a hard time remembering the storm part, I remember the floods well! There was a horrible hurricane, Doria, when I was very young and she did a ton of damage!

NJ and De have declared States of Emergency already to help prepare for the storm, and Cape May has ordered a mandatory evacuation!

I saw on my cousins' FB pages that their store was slammed today...they own Rosato's Save Mart right down by the Jersey shore and they said people were parked in the streets. NJ is closing down the parkway from exit 98 at 8pm tonight and there will be no on or off after that.

Why would they be closing a road down? Unreal.

Stay safe everyone! Good thing most couponers have a stockpile of food.

they are also closing the NYC subways and LIRR.
I think they do not want to have to rescue people from cars and have people trapped in trains.

hi all
Karen- they closed the roads cause they will most likely be roads that will be flooding and they don't want people taking a chance.
They told those is Jersey that it is a Mandatory evac, and if they don't abide, there will be NO to rescue them- they are on their own.
Just about all the bridges between PA and NJ will be closing too
I spent most of the day preparing, and getting things into the garage and making sure things were up off the floor in the basement.
This is the biggest storm our area has seen in 100 years.
I am sure we will be fine, but we are at least prepared- full propane tank to cook on the grill if power goes out.
We all ready got a call from the schools that they may postpone the first day of school if the buildings need to be used as shelters! They will let us know on Friday- if there is electricty- lol- hopefully they have cell phone numbers! Better make sure my phone is charged :)

I can't stand when people won't evacuate! It's so stupid! They wait till it's too late, then expect our brave first responders to risk their lives to help them when no one would be in danger if they would have just left in the first damned place!! Selfish! So I'm glad the governors of both NJ & MD have come right out and said that.

My mom heard that they told those who did chose to stay to write down their name, soc number and other info, put it in a plastic baggie and keep it in their shoe so if they they recover the body, they will be able to identify them! Talk about scare tactics.
I agree Delissa- those who ignore the warnings and then expect to to be rescued- its like those who expect the government to take care of them cause they made stupid mistakes and are looking to be bailed out

The fire chief on Ocracoke said they've ordered dozens of body bags. They've also been going around and telling people who ignored the order to evacuate that they're on their own. Scary scary stuff.

Well, the storm is here and it sounds bad and the worst isn't even here yet. We have tornado warnings will 5am just to the south east of us. That scares me..
We have a huge oak tree in my neighbors yard that I am worried about.

Well, thankfully our roblems weren't as bead as some, but I went down stairs and saw water coming in from the windows around 12:30 last night. We ahd gone ot and gotten window well covers and even attached them properly, but the window wells just filled up and came pouring in. Began bailing and trying to keep up with the water all over the floor. Finally marty came up with idea to use hpses to siphon the water out so we had to keep chceking if they were filling up and then he would go outside in the rain/wind and start sucking on the hoses to start the siphon.
We got very little sleep, but our house is ok, our power stayed on so far so the sump pump kept going- and still is. We are in the wind end of Irene now. You should see some of the pics people are sending into the news of HUGE downed trees.
Take care, I may not be on much, I need either some rest or an IV of coffee!
