After spending countless hours on the latest craze to hit the internet, I've come to collect a few pointers on Pinterest. I'd like to share them with you so that you can avoid the headaches that lazy pinning eventually causes!
Proper Pinning
There is nothing more annoying than finding the most wonderful idea Pinned just to follow the link to it and discover that you can't find the directions for how to recreate it! So before I re-pin anything, I do my best to make sure of what I'm pinning.
Take this Pin for example: http://pinterest.com/pin/230668812133860461/ - it piqued my interest, but when I followed the link, it simply took me to http://www.alwayssomethingreal.blogspot.com/. If you scroll down the entire (long!) page, you will not find anything regarding that picture. Even going through Older Posts, I was unable to find it. And since this blogger has the search feature disabled, I was not able to find it at all!
Something you must understand about pinning from blogs is this - While a blog post MAY be on Page 1 at the time you pin it, in several months, it most likely won't be!
So here's another Pin to examine: http://pinterest.com/pin/230668812133861996/ - follow the link and you get here: http://www.u-createcrafts.com/search/label/refashion. Again, not found on that page. This time, if you go to Older Posts, it is on the next page (at least at the time of this writing). So, if I were to want to re-pin this, I would not use the Repin button on Pinterest, because that would just perpetuate the craziness. Instead, what you should do is this:
Find the original post - in this case, here: http://www.u-createcrafts.com/search/label/refashion?updated-max=2009-11-17T23:25:00-07:00&max-results=20 (about halfway down at the time of this writing). Click on the title of that actual post ("Onesie into a Ruffle Dress").

That will take you to the page for JUST that post. (http://www.u-createcrafts.com/2009/07/onesie-into-ruffle-dress.html) That link will never change - it will always take you right to the thing you want to see. Then use your Pin It button to pin it yourself - properly. :)
Etiquette?
The next "issue" I have is really something that comes down to your own preference. I'll just give you an example and you can make your own decisions when re-pinning. :)
This Pin: http://pinterest.com/pin/230668812133860798/ - takes you to this blog: http://www.designsponge.com/2009/02/diy-idea-heart-shaped-paper-clips.html (and it does go directly to the post! ;) ). In the text, it says this:
i love projects that make me smile and think “why didn’t i think of that?”. this fun heart-shaped paper clip project from jessica jones (http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2009/02/heart-shaped-paper-clips.html) at how about orange is so easy it’s almost impossible to resist making a few of these at your desk right now.
- And the original blogger is linked to in that text. I personally tend to follow those links where credit is given and make a decision about which blog I want to pin. In this case, the Pinned blogger has even used the original pictures from the credited blog, so I would personally choose to Pin the original blog. Make sense? There are times when I feel someone has improved on an original (ok, maybe not original, but first posted) idea, so I choose to Pin them.
Unfortunately, Re-pinning on my iPhone doesn't allow me to go through this process, but whenever I'm on my computer, that's the methodology I use. :) I hope that this is helpful to someone else!
Happy Pinning!
