This is a piece that I put together a while back and is about what one MFG is doing to control coupon fraud.

Note: E-coupons are accepted at most natural product retail stores. Not all advertised products are available at all stores. We have done our best to ensure that our coupons meet retailer requirements, however, due to fraud concerns, some stores have decided not to accept manufacturers’ e-coupons. HealthESavers E-Coupons are not redeemable at online stores or in Canada.

all of the above was printed on the coupon

I know I posted a piece about printables not long ago but I found something that as of yet I have not been able to explain. I know you all find that hard to believe but it’s true . I was working to put together a trip to Wags this Week end but have ran into a road block. This may be good, not for me but for couponers in general,,,,,,,,,,,,, maybe. I was trying to get multiple coupons for the Hylands Cold and Cough register reward deal which Judy sent me information on. I registered on the site and then not thinking I printed the wrong coupon,,,,,,,,, Duh. I returned to the site logged in and selected the right coupon and received the message that the coupon was emailed to me just as the first one was. I got it and printed it with out a problem. I noticed that the “print setup” window popped up and gave me the option to print any number of coupons that I wished. Well I printed two and then took the time to read the coupon which we all should do. On the coupon I found my email address (part of it) and an id number that was linked to my profile on the Hylands site. What this does is allow the MGH to track down the person that printed these coupons, we all know that copying a coupon is a No No right, Well this is copying a coupon as far as I can tell.

That’s not all though, As a lot of you know I am set up really well to get nearly all the coupons I need. I have well over 30 email addresses and 8 computers set up to print from. Well I thought I would work my way around it and use a different email. It let me register and select the coupon but when I checked my email I received a blank page rather that the coupon. Well I don’t give up that easy so I fired up another PC, registered another email and selected the same coupon again. The same thing happened, I received a blank page instead of the coupon. So I went back to the coupon and reread it again. To my surprise the coupon had my IP address printed on it along with all of the other information.

What does this mean to us, well if my mis adventures were not self inflicted this means that this company is way ahead of the other printables in stopping fraud. For those of you that do not know what an IP address is, it is like the address on the front of your house but much more exclusive in that no one on the face of the earth uses the same IP address as you or me. Even though I have several Computers all of them use the same public IP address when on the world wide web. This address is assigned by your internet provider to your router or gateway. So all traffic leaving your house carries the same IP address. With this IP address, your email address and an exclusive ID number for you makes it easy to find you if you copy coupons (fraud). Sure you can go to another location and access the internet and have the coupon emailed to a different email address but most email providers require that you provide information before they issue a email address, ie your caught.

What does this all mean to use coupon users. Well on the good side if this is only the beginning of a correction and other coupon providers go to the same or similar systems the printables will be around for a long time for us to use. We won’t be able to use as many of them but they will be out there for us. On the bad side it makes it way to easy for the mfg to limit us on the quantities we get with coupons. All the MFG needs to do is issue the good coupons as printable coupons with the mentioned restrictions. They may still issue coupons in the inserts but they can put a lower value on those coupons and keep us from getting a load of freebies.

Now all of this information is a guess on my part but it looks like they are well on the way to solving the fraud problem with printable coupons.
