Annoying fact from an article I found

So my Aunt sent me this article that she saw because it related to couponing.
      http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home...month-cnnmoney

There were a couple points that really annoyed me, but the biggest was this fact:

The stigma of couponing as a downscale activity is fading. In fact, the primary drivers of coupon growth are affluent households with income of $100,000 and higher.

Does this seem correct? I know even if I made really good money I would probably still coupon in some shape or form, but the PRIMARY drivers are people who can already afford a nice lifestyle? This just doesn't sit well with me. I translate this as "the people who are 'extreme-ing' and clearing shelves are people who can already afford it and just want to collect items because they can?"

Please let me know if I am reading this wrong or give me another perspective because this is really irking me. I'm all

I'm not really sure what to think of this. As we know a lot of the articles regarding coupons don't seem to do a lot of research. I really think if people are doing it just to collect items that they don't need that is a little crazy.

I think that everything since the show has gotten out of hand. If an article can make money off it, they will print what they can.

I don't think that percentage is right in anyway- Of course for EC it might be true, but those of us who come here daily, yes we do it cause we like the thrill, but why did we originally start? To save money. (which most likely originated from not having enough or getting by)

Saw this in the comment box:

"These freaks MUST BE STOPPED! Extreme couponing is a illness. Enough!"

As much as I dislike the EC too, this just made me laugh out loud... The person apparently doesn't know that being a jackass is an "illness".

      That is awesome, Rasha!

And yeah, I hope that is wrong. I could see it for the EC's but not anyone I have met. And I think it came from marketing firm Inmar that was quoted, but it's not 100% clear.

I have done a bit of reading on the subgect over the last several years and have found that in the mid 2000s about 60% of all households used coupons and at that time the largest group using coupons were households making over 65,000. The precentage of people using coupons is quickly growing along with the prcentage of issued coupons being used which is making the MFGs start cutting back on issued coupons. So we as regular coupon users are only starting to see the effects of these increases, I'm predicting that if you save 75% of retail buy using coupons currently you will soon be only saving 65 to 70% because of the draw back of coupons and new restrictions because of the Extremes. And you are right a very large precentage of these new coupon users are doing it because they can and they seen it on TV which is why we are all hoping that when the program dies off so do the new coupon users.

ME too! and to be honest, I think they will... I think they'll continue, but then eventually the high will wear off.

I don't know why, but that just blows my mind.

      Thanks for everyone's insights!
